So my grandpa wants a new car...don’t ask me why - he is 84 years old, and drives about 15-20 miles per week.
His current ride : 2009 Hyundai Genesis V8 Sedan. It’s got about 93K on it and he loves it. The Genesis successfully converted him from being a staunch Lexus man. It’s RWD and he doesn’t like the gas mileage...because that’s important when drive 1000 miles a year.
His requirements:
- New
- AWD
- Leather Seats
- Automatic Seats
- Safety stuff (blind spot monitor, bark distance control, cameras and auto braking if available)
- Navigation
- Under $40,000
- Easy to get in and out of
- Doesn’t really want to go American (I’d recommend an Encore if not)
- Doesn’t want something too premium this time around (ie. Audi, BMW, Lexus, MB, etc)
- No VW (he had a bad experience like 30 years ago)
- Under 185" length...weird - I know. His rear bumper on the Genesis gets replaced about 4 times a year because the thing is too long for him.
So far, he’s looked at a 2016 Volvo S60 T5 and liked it a lot. What I’ve recommended (no order):
Subaru Forester XT
Mazda CX-5
Hyundai Tucson
Kia Sportage SX Turbo
He’s not a brand snob and I think the egress/ingress of a small crossover would be perfect. I would recommend a Kia Soul since it’s amazing for old people, but it’s a bit to quirky for him.
Any other suggestions?

Came here to say S60
Funny. My grandma is 76. She had an 09 Genesis. Traded it for this 2016 S60 Inscription. She is so happy she did. She got a stupidly good lease deal on it. Thing is fully loaded.

No VW or Audi. Apparently these are non-negotiables.
The XC60 was a bit too large for him. I’d try to put him in a Tiguan given the deals VW is giving right now if he’d consider looking at it.

I wanna say Lexus NX since I think it has a lot of the new technology too. And possibly the CX-3 if it’s not too small from him. One of my friends just picked one up, black with white-accented interior, it looks stunning.

Subaru Crosstrek? Smaller than a Forester (175" vs 182") but the downsides are smaller interior/cargo capacity and no turbo option.
Otherwise, CX-5 and S60 are great suggestions.

If American isn’t totally off the list, the refreshed Encore is really rather nice. I was surprised. Also the Regal is nice and a personal favorite of mine.
If he absolutely won’t do American, I agree the Tucson/CX5 or S60 would be solid.

He looked at the Crosstrek (just sat in it). Problem is, you can’t get power seats and I think it’s going to feel too slow for him.

Venza. Great ride height for limited mobility, Toyota reliability/service, and checks every requirement box to a T.

No power seats? That sucks!
Yeah, it probably will feel slow with only 148hp pushing nearly 3200 pounds of car when you consider a NB Miata makes similar power but weighs 800 pounds less...and the Miata isn’t necessary a quick car.

I would still go with something premium. 2017 Acura RDX AWD w/ AcuraWatch Plus. Maybe a MINI Countryman S All4.

No AWD. They freaking switched the motors to powering the front wheels in order to get it to “supposedly” break 53 mpg.

If your granddad isn’t set on AWD and mostly drives around town, it sounds like a leased electric car could be what he’s looking for.

Sounds like the CX-5 to me. The Forester is probably more than what he needs, and I can’t think of any other vehicles than the 4 you listed that hit all those checkmarks for under 40k
